The Group Churches

The parish group consists of four churches and two chapels. Services are held in all of these, but in some more regularly than in others. Please check the Calendar of Services.

St Mary’s, Hay
A flourishing church and the heart of the group. The building is mainly 19th century, over an original Norman church. Music is central to the life of St Mary’s and the superb 3-manual 2,000 pipe Bevington Organ is played weekly at Mass.

St John’s Chapel, Hay
A small chapel behind Chapters restaurant on Lion Street. Founded in 1254 as a Guild Chapel then forfeited to the crown in the Reformation, the chapel was saved, restored and presented to the town in the 1930s.

St Eigon’s, Llanigon
A lovely old church set in a graveyard with ancient yew trees. The open bell chamber, directly over the porch, is an intriguing feature.

‘Little’ St Mary’s, Capel-y-Ffin
Described by Rev. Kilvert as ‘squatting like a stout grey owl among its seven great black yews’, ‘Little St Mary’s is reached from Hay Bluff via Gospel Pass.

St Michael and All Angels’, Clyro
In the centre of Clyro village and where, in the 19th century, Rev. Francis Kilvert served as curate and wrote his diaries.

Bettws Chapel, Clyro
A ‘chapel of ease’ near the parish boundary. The Chapel sits in a field overlooking the Wye valley.
